SOCIOLINGUISTICS : Language,Dialect and Varieties

LANGUAGE,DIALECT AND VARIETIES

Language is the method of human communication either spoken or written or the tools of communication. Language has a varieties, language variety refers to the various forms of language triggered by social factors. Language may cahges from region to region.
Dialect is a language variety, that is characterized by systematic feautures (e.g, grammatical, pronunciation, vocabulary). And there is Idiolect, the speech variety of an individual speaker.
According to Wardaugh (1988: 20),Varieties is a specific set of linguistic items of human speech patterns.(e.g , pronunciation).

Kind of Language :
Regional dialects ; there may even be very distinctive local coloring in the language which you notice as you move from one location to another.
Social dialects ; the term dialect can also used to describe differences in speech associated with various social groups or classes.

According to Bell, these criteria  may be used to distinguish certain language from others:
1.Standardization
2.Vitality
3.Historicity
4.Autonomy
5.Reduction
6.Mixture
7.de facto norms

Question:
1.What is differences between of accents and dialects?
2.How do we know the origin regional of people based on their dialect by using the   same language?
3.How distinguish slang and idiom?
4.Do our dialects changes if we go abroad for 3 month?

ANSWER:
1.Accents based on pronunciation the speaker’s and Dialects based on Grammatical or region the speaker’s. e.g , Behaviour[British],Behavior[American]
2.The dialect of a region can be known based on the sound ,the preasure, the decrease of the tone and the short length of the language sounds referring to a particular area.
3.Slank is a type of language that is informal and playful, meanwhile idiom are expression that have meaning different from the dictionary definitions of the individual words in the expression.
4.Yes we do, because our neighborhood, social status and personality.

INTRODUCTION TO SOCIOLINGUISTICS

INTRODUCTION TO SOSIOLINGUISTICS

Sosiolinguistics is one of branch of linguistics that is study about relationship between language and society. Language is the tools of communication and Society is any group of people who are drawn together for a certain purpose.

Language is one of the most powerful emblems of social behavior,we use language to send vital socisl messages about who we are, where we come from.Sociolinguistics has become an increasingly important and popular field of study.

Kind of Sociolinguistics:
1.Knowledge of Language, when two or more people commucicate they can understand what are they talk about,we can call the system of communication that they employ a code.
2.Variation, the language that we use in everyday living is remarkably varied. Every regions or geographical location has its own language.
3.Scientific Investigation, the sienctific study of language, its uses and linguistics norms that people observe poses a number of problems
4.Language and Society, both of them have correlation because in society life need language as tools to communicate
5.Sociolinguistics and The Sociology of Language, sociolinguistics is concerned with investigating the relationship between language and society with the goal being a better understanding of the structure of language
6.Methodological Concerns, whatever sociolinguistics is ,it must be oriented toward both data and theory.

QUESTION:
  1. What is the relation of data and theory in Methodological Concerns?
  2. The meaning of code in language?
  3. How do we used language as well?

ANSWER:
  1. Whatever sociolinguistics is,it must be oriented toward both data and theory
  2. When two or more people communicate with each other in speech,we can call the system of communication that they employ a code
  3. The way is people can understand about someone else said and the grammar ,to use  awell-known tehnical terms is something that each speaker knows.

SYNONYM,ANTONYM AND HYPONYM

You can get SEMANTIC.PPT at this link : Tap here

A thesis for the degree of Master of Science with the tittle “The Interaction of Suffixation with Synonymy and Antonymy” by Laura L. Sabourin from University of Alberta. There is 93 pages in this thesis that talk about branches of semantic, especially in synonymy and antonymy.
This thesis tells us the interaction of suffixation with synonymy and antonymy in the study of semantic.it helps us to know more about terms that is in semantics.
Method used in this thesis are Participant,Materials and Procedure.

Abstract

This thesis reports on two psycholinguistic experiments that explore the question of how synonyms and antonyms are linked in the Mental Lexicon. The experirnental results confirm theoretical expectations that synonymic and antonymic links are fundamental cognitive relations among lexical items.
The results also suggest that the nature of these relations may not be identical because it was found that synonymic and antonymic pairs behaved differently in the two experirnental paradigms and that they also showed differences in the way they interacted when suffixation was added as a factor. The relevance of these findings to methodological issues in psycholinguistic experimentation is discussed and the implications for further research are outlined.

Content
In this chapter a description of the semantic relations of synonymy and antonymy was provided. The sub-types of the relations were outlined and examples of each were given. The section on synonymy and antonymy was concluded by introducing some of the studies in the literature that have focused on these relations.
In general, there is a lack of processing studies that directly compare the on-he processing of synonyms and antonyrns. Possible effects of suffixation on synonymic and antonymic pairs were discussed and the need for an investigation of semantic relations controling for suffixation was expressed.
In addition, the criteria used to establish suffixation as a control factor for these experiments is discussed, and the off-line rating pretest used to finalize target stimulus pairs is also described.
